In the face of a scenery where two official languages coexist, where people from quite distinct
nationalities and idioms reside, where there is a great flow of portuguese speakers as well as
foreign tourists who speak different languages; the present work is aimed at verifying the
ocurrence of the linguistic dynamics between individuals who coexist day after day in the
commercial area of Ciudad del Este in Paraguay; and instigated by complaints that certain
employees are not being allowed to speak one of the country’s official languages. We have also
taken into consideration the importance of pursuing a better comprehension of the positioning of
such individuals regarding the variety of languages used, given the intensity of the
sociolinguistics within this context. For this purpose we have emphasized the several points of
view of different scholars on the themes related to sociolinguistics, followed by some identity
aspects which may assist us in the understanding of our reasearch subjects’ behaviors. We have
also collected information from sources involved in such context, through interviews conducted
in the aforementioned area, so as to better clarify the way they think towards the languages
spoken and how the dynamics work in relation to the use of such languages. The results of our
survey demonstrate the acceptance and the interest, on the part of the traders, in the different
languages used and which are indispensable for this type of environment. It also showed that the
dynamics may occur in a number of ways depending on the individuals involved. The language
choice, therefore, may vary according to the occasion, location and people involved based on
individual preference, political standing on the same matter and especially due to contextual
factors indicating which languages must be used in determined situation.
