Syria has been in the news of the international media since 2011 when the Arab Spring started,
which soon after turned into a long civil war on Syrian territory involving various actors of the
international system. Having such prominence in the international system, the Syrian civil war

sides of this dichotomy use constant discourses to condemn or glorify Al-Assad's government
to try to influence the public opinion and the media in addition to justify their actions and
involvement in the Syrian war. This research explains how Al-Assad family ascended to power
historically, and then explains some political, identity, ideological, and economic factors that
are not normally explained, but in fact drive the discourses on both sides
