The following study aims to analyze a few examples of the intellectual production of
19th century‟s Paraguayan Historical Revisionism, especially the works of authors that
supported by the Stronist regime (1954-1989). For such, we examined the three-volume
series Stroessner, originally edited and published between 1972 and 1979. Written by
Sindulfo Perez Moreno and Carlos Meo - two supporters of the Stronist Regime – such
series exemplifies the called "Stronist Literature", a set of works developed by
supporters of the dictatorship with the purpose of promoting the regime and its leader.
By examining these books, we intend to detect their revisionist discourse especially
concerning Stroessner‟s representation as the nation leader. Our main hypothesis is that
the said 19th revisionist take on paraguayan history intended to legitimize the Stronist
Regime, its power and actions by presenting Alfredo Stroessner (1912-2006) as political
heir and perpetuator of the legacy of past national heroes and his government as the
return to the so called "Edad de Oro” of Paraguay. Therefore, our investigation shows
that the historical interpretation proposed by literature of some paraguayan historical
figures held great importance in the maintenance of the Stronism‟s legitimacy, thus
collaborating for the remarkable longevity of the said regime in Paraguay
