Rio de Janeiro, early twentieth century: a little more than ten years after the
proclamation of Republic, the city was filled with tensions, rivalries and social
contradictions. In order to examine this historical context, the following dissertation
studies the representations from news of crimes and transgressions involving women
and published by the newspaper Correio da Manhã, between the years of 1901 and
1904. Based on the analysis and analysis of faits divers published by the first 1000
editions of this newspaper, we aimed to reflect on the senses conferred on gender in
that historical moment. Through the course of this dissertations we have shown that,
as intellectual constructions permeable to other types of discourse, the news implied
classifications from which we were able to unveil debates and projects of different
social actors, especially regarding their readings of the sexual differences and the
danger of the degeneracy of the national type
